MadeinTYO, Atlanta-based rapper, has released his long-awaited album, "NEO TYO". This is the rapper's first full-length album in three years, and it has been received somewhat positively by both fans and critics. TYO's lackadaisical style is well-continued with this project, and it's something fans of the artist will likely enjoy.
The album opens with all-new ideas. The first few songs have spacey, trance-like beats with psychedelic transitions in between melodies. MadeinTYO heavily experiments with melodic, autotuned vocals, and it pays off on songs like 'Mobbing Through' and 'So Many'. Songs such as 'Stunt' show an ability to adapt to many of the newest evolutions in hip hop production. There's no lack of variety throughout the project, although certain flows feel stale including verses on 'Must Be Nice' and 'Jazzy'.
Deeper into the album, certain songs feel heavily influenced by older work from other artists. The Carti influence is unparalleled on tracks like 'carrying cash' and (again) 'Jazzy'. These tracks aren't necessarily bad but don't innovate enough on ideas from artists that they take from. Other potential influences across the album could be Cochise or SoFaygo, two artists who might have spiced things up had they been allowed to feature somewhere across NEO TYO. Some features on the album are incredibly well-placed, such as both vocal appearances on 'SYBP', a track in which underground artist NINETY6MILES is given room to shine and showcase his talent.
The closing track 'Thinking to Myself' is very different from the rest of the album and has a beautiful instrumental with dreary vocal chops that pair well with MadeinTYO's vocals. Overall, the album may have benefited from more features and better marketing. It didn't appear to sell well on it's opening weekend, but that doesn't mean listeners shouldn't give it a listen.
