NAV’s newest release is titled ‘Demons Protected By Angels’;
an interesting phrase that sounds more badass than substantive. Upon its announcement,
many fans found the album cover off-putting, as it seemed to have nothing to do
with the project’s predetermined title. While trippy and fascinating, NAV’s
choice of album art seems to convey a need for a better title with hype/outdoor
themes which would better-match the album’s tracks. Lyrical themes are typical
of past projects, referencing NAV’s lavish lifestyle and expensive tastes while
changing pace when NAV feels spiteful toward his adversaries of years passed.
Production feels extremely trendy and modern. NAV’s beat-choice is similar to
that of recent projects by rappers Gunna and Lil Uzi Vert. As per usual, the
rapper was able to secure a lengthy list of A-1 features including Travis
Scott, Future and others. Several songs feel like a refreshing change of pace
for NAV’s sound, including One Time (ft. Don Toliver and Future) and Lost
Me (ft. RealestK). Other songs take influence from current SoundCloud
trends, such as Demons in My Cup.
