Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers Nearly Didn't Drop

Kendrick Lamar's 2022 album might be one of the best releases hip hop fans will get this year... yet it almost didn't come out. The album, which featured a great number of artists and topped charts upon release, was extremely focused on self-reflection and introspective themes relating to Kendrick's upbringing and his journey in an attempt to sort out his mental health. The artist allegedly spent most of his time creating the album in solitude, keeping away from the influences of friends and family. Kendrick avoided the opinions of individuals with whom he was close in order to prevent himself from second-guessing his expressive choices, as, assuming he got feedback on the incredibly vulnerable subject matter, "Mr. Morale might have become just another set of songs on a hard drive..." Briana Younger, W Magazine. The album certainly stirred up controversy, but in a good way. Kendrick influenced the engagement of hip hop fans in their own respective mental health discussions all over social media, and many songs on the album contained critical social commentary which thematically differs from many topics discussed on his previous projects.
